Bausch & Lomb Introduces SofPort Easy-Load Lens Delivery System

FOR RELEASE Monday, April 18, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Bausch & Lomb has unveiled its SofPort Easy-Load Lens Delivery System, designed for more efficient cataract surgery, here at the 2005 ASCRS Symposium on Cataract, IOL and Refractive Surgery which runs until April 20.  The Easy-Load Lens Delivery System includes the Bausch & Lomb SofPort Advanced Optics (AO) intraocular lens pre-loaded in a lens retainer and the inserter.

The Easy-Load system allows surgeons to load the lens into the inserter without touching or aligning the IOL with forceps, which virtually eliminates mishandling and damage to the lens for more predictable, reliable results.

"Bausch & Lomb's SofPort AO lens is truly a surgeon-friendly IOL that unfolds very gently and controllably within the eye," said Louis D. "Skip" Nichamin, M.D., Brookville, Pa.  "And the new SofPort Easy-Load inserter is arguably one of the easiest IOL injector delivery systems to use because it eliminates lens-loading difficulties, so there's one less thing to worry about in the operating room."

Bausch & Lomb's SofPort Easy-Load system is the first and only integrated, single-use, single-handed planar delivery IOL insertion system that allows IOL insertion through a sub-3.0 mm incision for less invasive surgery and improved patient recovery times.  The Easy-Load Lens Delivery System uses the same M-fold, planar, one-handed delivery as its predecessor, the Mport ® SI.

The SofPort AO lens is a foldable, newer generation silicone IOL with PMMA haptics and square edges specifically designed for use with the Easy-Load Lens Delivery System.
