No. 1 for Comfort vs. Opti-Free Express
FOR RELEASE Friday, June 24, 2005
DALLAS - Bausch & Lomb, at the 2005 American Optometric Association meeting here, released results from a multisite study that show its ReNu® with MoistureLoc® Multi-Purpose Solution (MPS) receives superior comfort ratings from patients and equivalent safety data compared to Opti-Free Express MPS among patients wearing silicone hydrogel contact lenses.1
In the two-month study, conducted by 17 independent investigators in the United States, 407 patients were enrolled. Study participants were randomly assigned to use one of the lens care solutions throughout the evaluation and were asked at each visit to rate its performance on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the most favorable rating.
According to the overall results, in rating comfort , the study showed:
-
Patients rated ReNu with MoistureLoc MPS significantly higher (87 points) than Opti-Free Express (83 points);
-
Patients using ReNu with MoistureLoc MPS had fewer symptoms/complaints associated with comfort.
According to the overall results, in rating end-of-day comfort, the study showed:
-
Patients rated ReNu with MoistureLoc MPS significantly better (82 points) than Opti-Free Express (76 points);
-
Patients using ReNu with MoistureLoc MPS had fewer symptoms/complaints associated with end-of-day comfort.
According to the overall results, in rating (lack of) dryness, the patient preference study showed:
-
Patients rated ReNu with MoistureLoc MPS significantly higher (86 points) than Opti-Free Express (81 points);
-
Patients using ReNu with MoistureLoc MPS had fewer symptoms/complaints associated with dryness.
The investigators also reported equivalent slit lamp findings for both lens care systems for the following conditions: epithelial edema; epithelial microcysts; corneal staining; limbal injection; bulbar injection; tarsal conjunctival abnormalities; corneal neovascularization and corneal infiltrates.
"This study demonstrates that ReNu with MoistureLoc solution provides greater end-of-day comfort and less dryness with silicone hydrogel lenses compared to Opti-Free Express," said William T. Reindel, O.D., M.S., Bausch & Lomb director of scientific and clinical affairs. "The findings also show that both lens care systems are equivalent in helping to maintain eye health."
