ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Erning Xia, Ph.D., Bausch & Lomb research fellow, has been named one of the Top Minorities in Science by Science Spectrum magazine.

Dr. Xia was selected by the magazine's editors from among nominees representing outstanding Hispanic, Asian-American, Native American, and African-American science professionals who have made a significant impact in their scientific disciplines and in their communities.  Dr. Xia is one of a total of 66 U.S. scientists to be so honored in 2005.

Dr. Xia's research has been instrumental in the development of key products in the Bausch & Lomb contact lens-care business, including the Company's flagship brand, ReNu and in the development of new formulations to treat dry eye and other eye diseases.

The holder of more than 50 issued or pending patents, and author of more than 30 scientific publications, Dr. Xia, a native of Nanjing, China, joined Bausch & Lomb in 1995.  He earned a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the University of Iowa in Iowa City; a Master of Science degree in Biopharmaceuticals from China Pharmaceutical University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Nanjing College of Pharmacy.

"At Bausch & Lomb, we believe that diversity in its many forms, including diversity of thought, experience, ethnicity, and gender, drives innovation, and creates a competitive advantage," said Praveen Tyle, Ph.D., Bausch & Lomb senior vice president of Global Research & Development and Chief Scientific Officer.  "We are delighted that Dr. Xia is being recognized as an exceptional scientist and outstanding role model who is committed to fostering cultural understanding and mentoring young scientists."

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Xia is past president of the Bausch & Lomb Asia Pacific Employee Network and former vice president of the Chinese Association of Greater Rochester.  He is an active volunteer at the Chinese School of Rochester and is a mentor to students from a number of universities.

"I am thrilled to honor the scientific field's brightest stars," says Dr. Tyrone D. Taborn, editor in chief of Science Spectrum magazine and CEO of Career Communications Group, Inc., conference producer and publisher of Science Spectrum. "If we are to bring on a new cohort of science talent, we must begin by recognizing and applauding those in the multicultural communities who have excelled."

Dr. Xia and the other honorees will be recognized for their achievements on Sept. 16 at the Minorities in Research Science Conference in Baltimore.
