Bausch & Lomb Researcher Honored by Polytechnic University

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Bausch & Lomb Vice President of Research Joseph C. Salamone, Ph.D., today received the Sesquicentennial Medal of Polytechnic University, N.Y., during a convocation celebrating the University 150th anniversary and the inauguration of its 10th president.

Dr. Salamone, who received a doctorate in Chemistry/Polymer Science from Polytechnic University in 1967, was honored with the Sesquicentennial Medal for his lifetime scientific achievements.  An active scientist, Dr. Salamone has contributed to 165 technical papers and is holder of more than 115 patents in biomaterials, the majority of which are related to ophthalmology and skin care.

Dr. Salamone was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Polytechnic University in 1984.  His scientific honors include the 2005 Herman F. Mark Award Technology Award for extraordinary achievements in polymer science and engineering, and the national 2004 American Chemical Society Award in Industrial Chemistry for outstanding contributions to chemical research in the industrial context.  He also has been honored with several awards from the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society.

Professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, where he had been Dean of the College of Pure & Applied Science, Dr. Salamone is editor-in-chief of â€Å“The Polymeric Materials Encyclopedia and co-founder of Polymer Technology Corp., now part of Bausch & Lomb.  He has served as chairman of the Division of Polymer Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and president of the Pacific Polymer Federation.
