Bausch & Lomb GP Materials Receive Expanded FDA Post-Surgical Indications

  • Boston® XO®, EO® and ES® Gas Permeable Contact Lenses Receive Clearance for Use Following Penetrating Keratoplasty or Refractive Surgeries

FOR RELEASE THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2006

ATLANTA - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared an expanded post-surgical indication for Bausch & Lomb's Boston XO® (hexafocon A), Boston EO® (enflufocon B) and Boston ES ® (enflufocon A), gas permeable (GP) contact lenses for use in post-surgical situations following penetrating keratoplasty or refractive surgery.

The Boston XO, EO and ES GP contact lenses are indicated for the daily wear correction of refractive ametropia including: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia in phakic and aphakic individuals with non-diseased eyes.  The expanded indications now allow for these lenses to be prescribed in non-diseased eyes that require a rigid contact lens for the management of irregular corneal conditions such as keratoconus, Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD), or following penetrating keratoplasty or refractive (e.g., LASIK) surgery.

The announcement was made at the SECO International 2006 optometric educational meeting held here until Feb. 26.  Bausch & Lomb currently produces the Boston ES, EO and XO materials as lens buttons and Authorized Boston Manufacturers process the buttons into finished contact lenses according to the eye care practitioner's prescription.

These new lens designs must be cleaned and disinfected using an FDA-approved chemical disinfection system for gas permeable lenses, such as Bausch & Lomb's Boston SIMPLUSTM    Multi-Action Solution or Boston AdvanceTM .
