John W. Sheets, Jr., Ph.D., is a Bausch + Lomb corporate vice president and chief technology officer, leading the company’s global research and development organization. He was named to this post in 2008.
Dr. Sheets has more than 25 years of experience in the medical device industry, with a specialization in ophthalmic research and development. Before joining Bausch + Lomb, he served as global president and CEO of HOYA Surgical Optics. Previously, he was worldwide vice president, research and development, and chief technical officer at ETHICON (a Johnson & Johnson company), and vice president, Surgical, IOL and Therapeutics Research and Development, at Alcon Laboratories. Dr. Sheets has also held roles as director, new product and process development at IOLAB Corporation (a Johnson & Johnson company), and director of research for Pharmacia Ophthalmics, Inc.
Dr. Sheets was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1953. He holds Ph.D. and master of science degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, as well as a bachelor of science degree in Zoology with a post-baccalaureate in Chemistry, all from the University of Florida. He also completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard University.
He is a member of the Society for Biomaterials. In 2007, he was appointed as an inaugural member of the Florida Life Sciences Council Advisory Board for Enterprise Florida.
